July 20th represents the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing that occurred on July 20, 1969. Neil Armstrong uttered those infamous words “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” Word has it he was so excited the words might have been jumbled in transmitting to earth. Regardless, a very momentous occasion at the time.
The anniversary of the July 20, 1969 moon landing was remarkable not only for the feat of making it to the moon, but in relation to the times in this country. Assassinations, civil unrest, Vietnam war, and on and on left an indelible mark. The moon landing became almost became an afterthought. Thank goodness it did not.
I was in San Diego as a recruit in the Navy just finishing the eight weeks of basic training. We were all hoarded into a very stuffy room on July 20, 1969, then we watched the moon landing on a black and white TV screen unbeknown to us that in forty years we would be celebrating this moon landing anniversary.
I remember the graininess of the video feeds from the moon as they appeared on the screen. Armstrong and Aldrin seemed like ghosts on a foggy beach in the middle of nowhere. Funny how images stay with you.
Today, with the space shuttle using the unbelievable advances in technology, we are able to feel as if we are there with the astronauts as they perform their various functions.
